France Supports Bolivia’s Nationalization of French Company, Demands Payment
On May 4th the French government announced that it will respect Bolivia’s decision to nationalize the Bolivian electricity generation company Corani SA which was owned by the French company GDF Suez through its subsidiary Inversiones Ecoenergy Bolivia since 2008. “France respects the sovereign right of the Bolivian State to assure control over its natural resources,” said the French Foreign Minister in a press conference who then demanded a “prompt and complete compensation”. The French foreign minister ratified,”the disposition of French companies to accompany Bolivia in its economic development and cooperate in order to launch innovative projects in the area of clean and renewable energy.”
Evo Morales nationalized three electricity generation companies this past weekend along with the worker-owned ELFEC of Cochabamba which has promised to fight the nationalization.
